The British people respecting traditions were shocked: the country switched over to decimal system with pound being equal to 100 pence. “Our darling has lost 140 liege people,” newspapers mourned. The fact is that the weight of 240 silver coins (sterling) had been equal to 1 pound since the 12th century. In the 17th century, the UK switched over to paper money, yet 1 pound was still equal to 240 pence. However, the people were stoical about this trouble, and even the decoration was unaffected. The British renovate the portrait of Elisabeth II on the banknotes – the image is getting older like the Queen. Otherwise the people may stop recognizing her.
