The National Research Tomsk State University, founded in 1878 by Emperor Alexander II as the Imperial Siberian University, from the first day of its existence was called upon to assert the ideals of science, education and culture over the vast expanses of the Asian part of the country.
The paramount priority of the university is the desire to bring up a free, broad-minded and creative personality capable of making independent scientific and worldview decisions. Faithful to the traditions of its predecessors, the university team actively develops modern approaches and methods in all areas, strengthening its status in the Russian and international scientific and educational space.
The merits of the National Research Tomsk State University in the formation and development of domestic science, education and culture were recognized by many national awards. In 1998, a decree of the President of the Russian Federation enrolled the University into the State Register of Especially Valuable Objects of Cultural Heritage for the People of the Russian Federation.
As a research-type university, the National Research Tomsk State University sees its mission in preserving and fostering spiritual values of mankind, obtaining and disseminating advanced knowledge and information, leading the training of the intellectual elite of society through the integration of the educational process, fundamental scientific research and innovative approaches.
Today the University includes 23 departments and educational institutes, 151 faculties, 3 branches and 38 centers of pre-university training and vocational guidance in Siberia and Kazakhstan. The University employs 900 candidates of sciences, 24 academicians and associate fellows of Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Russian Academy of Education, Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Russian Academy of Rocketry and Artillery Sciences, 51 winners of the State Prize of the Russian Federation. Young scientists and students at the University have been awarded 29 medals by RAS, more than 500 students have been awarded medals and diplomas by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
In 2013, the National Research Tomsk State University joined the list of Russia’s Top 15 leading universities, entitling the University to state funding to put it into the Top 100 in world university rankings.
The Tomsk State University ranks among the top five classical universities of the country and is one of the five leading universities in the top-15 list according to the QS rating of BRICS countries.
The University is headed by the Rector, Eduard Vladimirovich Galazhinsky.

Awards and titles: Winner of the State Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of education; holder of the Honorary Worker of Higher Vocational Education of the Russian Federation Lapel Badge.
Since 1998 – Director of the Center for Social and Psychological Education of TSU. Since 1999 – Deputy Dean for Educational Work, from 2005-2012 – the Dean of the Department of Psychology of TSU. Since 2013 he has been the first Vice-Rector of the TSU and Executive Director of the Development Program of the Tomsk State University for 2010-2019.
He heads the working group on the preparation of the Program for Raising the Competitiveness of TSU Among the World's Leading Scientific and Educational Centers. Since November 21st, 2013 he has been the Rector of TSU.
