The leader of the expedition Maurice Herzog and his comrade Louis Lachenal climbed to an altitude of 8078 meters. Herzog told about the extraordinary difficulties of this ascent in his book, Annapurna: First Conquest of an 8000-meter Peak. Fans of geography will be interested to find out that even though Annapurna was conquered first, it is still defiant: it has seen much fewer successful ascents than the other eight-thousander.
