He was the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. And although contemporaries held de Soto’s expedition a failure, historians and geographers do not share their pessimism: in addition to geographical discoveries, de Soto had other merits. For example, the horses that escaped him gave rise to the North American mustang population.
