The landmark event took place at a quarry in Redhill, Surrey, England. There is a story that Novel invented the dynamite almost by chance, when bottles with the explosive nitroglycerine were transported in the fossil flour for safety, i.e., virtually in silicon dioxide. One of the bottles burst open and nitroglycerine mixed with the rock. It was a sort of the Newtonian Apple and Nobel patented the dynamite. The dynamite made him a multimillionaire but burdened him with the guilt. Atoning for guilt, he established the Nobel Prizes. “Literature has an explosive quality at its root,” the writer Günter Grass hinted at the dynamite in his Nobel Lecture.
