Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency’s international media center is hosting an online meeting of the RAS Scientific Council on Life Sciences with a special focus: “Post-COVID-19 Rehabilitation: Chronic Fatigue and Pulmonary Fibroses.” Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, director of the National Research Center for Preventive Medicine, chief visiting expert in therapy and general medical practice of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation, head of the Federal Vaccination Advisory Center, Oksana Drapkina delivered her presentation about a Prospective Hospital Register of Patients with Suspected or Confirmed Coronavirus Infection and Community-Acquired Pneumonia – TARGET-VIP.

Incoming data indicates a marked increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Moscow. Those who stayed ill at home and did not contact specialists had serious complications during their disease. According to the results of a patient poll, 6 months after discharge from hospital the readmission rate stood at 11.6%, the incidence of acute myocardial infarctions was 0.6%, and the fatality rate was 3%.

“Anticoagulant therapy was performed in 84.2% of cases, taking into account substitute drug treatment. Formation of thrombi provoked by autoantibodies was detected in at least one half of blood serum samples collected from 172 COVID-19 hospital cases. Chronic thrombotic vasculitis damages the nervous system as well as lungs, kidneys and skin. In addition, immune deposits accumulate in vascular walls of inner organs as the activation of the complement system causes autoimmune inflammation,” says Oksana Drapkina.
