The scientific community pays special attention to climate research. This includes monitoring, global and regional modeling, assessments of the nature of anthropogenic impacts on the climate, and models of possible consequences. At the present stage of the human civilization development, an obvious fact is manifested: the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere – these important components involved in the climate system formation – are strongly affected by human activity. In this regard, the study of greenhouse gas flows between the atmosphere and other natural environments is an important area of climate research. Viktor Stepanenko, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Deputy Director of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Research Computing Center, talks about the place of water bodies in the global carbon cycle and mathematical models of terrestrial aquatic ecosystems.
