On July 20, during the press tour to A.F. Tsyba Medical Radiological Scientific Center in Obninsk, the Scientific Russia portal and other invited journalists visited the Radiotherapy Department of the MRSC. There are four divisions in the department: the Proton and Photon Therapy Division, the Radiotherapy Division, the Clinical Dosimetry and Topometry Division, and the Local and General Hyperthermia Division.
The division is fitted with high-tech equipment to plan and perform radiotherapy; therefore, patients are treated according to world standards. The high-tech radiotherapy equipment means more effective treatment, much fewer complications, and preserved quality of life for the patients.
“Radiotherapy is one of the methods, along with chemotherapy and treatment of malignant tumors. Over 50% of all cancer patients receive some form of radiotherapy, which has been developing fast in recent years both in Russia and across the world. There is ongoing re-equipment process; major oncology centers receive modern equipment, which expands the possibilities for effective radiotherapy,” said Igor Gulidov, Head of the Proton and Photon Therapy Division of A.F. Tsyba Medical Radiological Scientific Center – a branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Center of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation, Professor, Honored Physician of the Russian Federation.
According to him, the center has the entire range of equipment and highly skilled staff, which makes for highly effective treatment.
“We are targeting the tumor locally, with minimal impact on the surrounding issue. This can be done with modern medications. We have to hit the right spot every time. That is where the modern equipment helps, but we need additional devices <…> With accelerators, we can provide quality treatment to a large number of patients. We are reducing the treatment time and improve the quality,” the speaker explained.
