With this agreement, signed in Washington, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachov put an end to the permanent competition in missile placement between the two countries. According to the agreement, all the missiles with ranges between 500 and 5500 kilometers had to be eliminated. In less than 4 years, the countries met their commitments: the US eliminated 846 missiles, and the USSR, 1846. About half of them had never been on alert duty but were manufactured as a reserve.
