3 million cubic meters of snow and ice started to move from Mount Huascaran. The avalanche traveled 10 kilometers, increased to 10 million cubic meters along the way, and in a few minutes wiped out the town of Ranrahirca and six smaller villages. About 4,000 people died. Scientists call this disaster the greatest in the history of avalanches.
