Built on the initiative of energetic and progressive President Juscelino Kubitschek di Oliveira in the center of the country, the new and modern city of Brasilia looks like a drawn bow with an arrow in it or airplane as seen from above. The pace of construction was high – the project was implemented in 4 years. Today, the population of Brasilia is over 1.5 million people, yet they say that numerous officials who are kept back in the capital by double salary buy up all flight tickets on weekends to have fun in Rio de Janeiro. They also say that Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer have built a city for cars and air conditioners, instead of people. No, as Ostap Bender (main character of novels by Ilf and Petrov) used to say, it is not Rio de Janeiro!
