В 1957 г. открыли антарктическую станцию «Восток»

The Vostok station is a year younger than Mirny, the first Soviet Antarctic stations, yet it has its own mind-blowing records. Here, near the South magnetic pole of the Earth, the coldest temperature on the planet was registered at the level of -89.2 °C. The cold pole of our planet is located 3488 meters above the sea level, i.e., higher than the highest point of the Pyrenees. Here the air is practically dry and the need in oxygen is incredibly acute. The nearest coast line is more than 1000 km away. Once there was a warm day at the Vostok station – it was December 16, 1957, exactly the opening day. The thermometer showed only – 13.6 °C.
