On August 3, at 23:25, submarine commander William Anderson told the crew that Operation Sunshine had been successfully completed. Despite such a light name, the submarine was deep under ice at that moment. The point it was passing was called the North Pole of the Earth. Thus, the Americans accomplished two tasks: they were the first ones to reach the North Pole on a ship and proved that it was possible to sail using the shortest routes.
