On this day, world’s first nuclear submarine Nautilus slid off the rigs of the shipyard in American Groton. And four years later, in July 1958, the submarine left Pearl Harbor and headed north. On August 3, at 23:25, submarine commander William Anderson told the crew that Operation Sunshine had been successfully completed. Despite such a light name, the submarine was deep under ice at that moment. The point it was passing was called the North Pole of the Earth. Thus, the Americans accomplished two tasks: they were the first ones to reach the North Pole on a ship and proved that it was possible to sail using the shortest routes.
