В 1884 году родился биохимик Казимир Функ

In 1912, Polish scientist Kazimierz Funk recovered a substance curing mysterious disease beriberi from rice husk. Nobody knows why he was looking for it in rice wastes. It is probably that the scientist’s intuition worked. Funk was convinced that there are some substances vital for life. However, the idea is not new – back in 1880, Russian scientist Nikolay Lunin proved that human organism needs some special substances. Yet, he did not give a name to them. Funk started looking for these substances and found them. He called them vitamins (derived from vita – life in Latin). Along the way, he introduced term vitamin deficiency to make it clear what human organism needs for full-quality life.
