The hardness under our feet was created by Frederick Walton from the UK. Attempts to apply some substance on oiled cloth had been taken before; however, only Walton managed to come up with the method that has remained practically the same till these days. In order to avoid technical details, we will say that the original natural recipe includes the mass of ground cork, pine-tree resin and natural oxidized flax-seed oil applied on jute fabric (in contrast to numerous artificial polyvinylchloride linoleums widespread in the 20th century). It was Walton who created and patented the word “linoleum” made of two Latin words: “lino” meaning flax and “oleum” meaning oil.
