The 9-year-old Joseph Meister was bitten by a rabid dog, and he would have died as did all those who were bitten before him, but the village doctor advised his mother to go to Pasteur that was testing a vaccine at the moment. The boy recovered and dedicated all his life to Pasteur: till the end of his days, he served as a gateman in the Pasteur Institute and took care of his benefactor’s grave. Other people’s rage became the cause of his death: angry German soldiers demanded to open up Pasteur’s grave, but he preferred to take his own life.
