5 мая 1925 года арестован учитель, преподававший теорию Дарвина

John T. Scopes, a high school teacher, was arrested in Dayton Township, Tennessee. A trial took place two months later and after an eight-minute deliberation, the jury returned a verdict: “guilty”.

For teaching Darwin’s evolutionary theory – banned by state law – Scopes was sentenced to a fine of $100. This truly medieval trial was unanimously named by the press a “monkey trial.” The verdict was overturned under a technical pretext. Other than worldwide shame, little comes out of attempts to address scientific disputes by administrative methods.
