4 сентября 1913 года случилось последнее из великих географических открытий

The expedition under command of Boris Andreyevich Vilkitsky navigating the icebreakers Taymyr and Vaygach and exploring the northern seas discovered Emperor Nicholas II Land and Tsesarevich Alexey Island. After the revolution, Emperor Nicholas II Land was renamed Severnaya Zemlya and Tsesarevich Alexey Island – Maly Taymyr. Later, the scientists found out that Severnaya Zemlya was not an island but an archipelago and gave its islands separate names — Pioneer, Komsomolets, Bolshevik, October Revolution, Schmidt. There were two people in the Russian history bearing the name of Schmidt but the island immortalized Otto Yulievich, a polar explorer.
