James Ritty from Dayton, Ohio, had finally won the struggle with the sticky fingered staff in his own bar whose behavior drove him to a nervous breakdown. An immigrant from Alsace, he traveled to his homeland to improve his mental state. Walking around the steamboat bored out of his mind, Ritty wandered into the engine room and found a mechanism that counted how many times the ship's propeller went around. As a result, Ritty improved his business along with his health: he patented “Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier" that dramatically increased the profit of his saloon that previously found itself in his bartenders' pockets. In Russian, the device is known under the boring name “cash register machine.”
