Having worked hard in the area of electric telegraph and creating a perfect DC generator design, the so-called dynamo machine, German engineer Werner von Siemens turned to the electrification of railways. And he had another success: at the Berlin Industrial Exposition, his company Siemens&Halske presented the world's first electric train to a bewildered audience. His electric locomotive that looks more like a modern electric car was fitted with a modest 13 hp electric motor. A third rail was used to supply electricity. This electric locomotive, so resembling a toy, pulled three 18-passenger cars and accelerated to 7 kilometers per hour. This exhibition amusement is now held to be the beginning of the entire history of electric railway transport.
