At the heat of the Battle of Stalingrad, the Council of People’s Commissars issued a decree on founding the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition. The educational establishment meant for training specialists in creation of jet-propelled, radio-guided and other missiles changed its name with time for the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPHI). The list of outstanding physicists who founded the institute and worked at it may include a couple of pages. As for its graduates’ achievements, a year will be hardly enough to tell about them.
