In 1939, the associate professor of the Department of Higher Mathematics of the Moscow Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold told Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in Russian. In his account, the Land of Oz becomes the Emerald City, Dorothy – Ellie, the wizard of Oz – the wizard of the Emerald City and the fairy tale – the all-time favorite fairy tale of the Soviet and post-Soviet children. In the 1960s – 1970s, Volkov wrote five more books featuring the same characters. He genuinely tried to abandon the fairy tales and wrote two novels but they did not become famous. On the other hand, the total circulation of the Wizard of the Emerald City and its sequels exceeded twenty-five million copies. And it’s still growing.
On July 14, 1891, the mathematician and writer Alexander Melentievich Volkov was born
